Proverbs 27:6 says 'Faithful are the wounds of a friend'.
This means that those we love and those that love us, those who we call friend can
reach down deep within us and cause hurt. It may be Godly counsel being given or
it may be something that has been done in action or behavior. But it only
hurts us when it is from someone we love - our friend
(Proverbs 17:17).
It is said that 'the truth hurts'. It does sometimes hurt - especially when we
know that what is being told is actually the truth. When we know in our hearts
it is the truth. And the thing that holds one back from digesting it is pride.
And when pride rears it's ugly head - soon there will be destruction
(Proverbs 16:18).
How can we go through our lives and not show our friends where they are amiss?
If we don't show this love to them, then we really can't say that we love them or care.
Where no counsel is, the people fall: but
in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
Proverbs 11:14
Whether or not they receive it, is up to them. They may get angry, they may
get hurt and they may even want nothing to do with you. But you can't make
the choice for them, only they can take what is being given out of love and
accept it with their heart in humbleness or reject it with their pride.
Poverty and shame shall be to him that
refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.
Proverbs 13:18
Godly counsel is sometimes needed to show our friends where they may be missing
the mark. And let us not forget that we also need to listen to wise counsel
and receive it ourselves and be not wise in our own eyes.
Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be
wise in thy latter end.
Proverbs 19:20
