What is an idol? Webster's defines it as this:
An image, form or representation, usually of a man or other animal, consecrated as an object of worship; a pagan deity. Idols are usually statues or images, carved out of wood or stone, or formed of metals, particularly silver or gold.

But an idol does not have to be an image or form as described. It can also be in the heart of man.

Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?
Ezekiel 14:3
Because they despised my judgments, and walked not in my statutes, but polluted my sabbaths: for their heart went after their idols.
Ezekiel 20:16

What is in the heart of man? What is in your heart is what is important to you. Whether it be God, your job, material possessions, a goal, or a person. None of these things are bad in themselves. Your job is important as it provides the needs of your family. Goals are not bad in themselves either. But it is when you sin in order to satisfy what is in your heart - that is an idol.

When we use our energy to focus on what we want, our heart is not focused on God.

Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols; That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols.
Ezekiel 14:4-5
Because they despised my judgments, and walked not in my statutes, but polluted my sabbaths: for their heart went after their idols.
Ezekiel 20:16

How do you get rid of these idols in your heart? The idols that are keeping you from a right relationship with God?

Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.
Ezekiel 14:6

You repent and turn away from them and focus your mind and heart on God. Use the energy spent on the 'idols of the heart' to focus on what is really important - God.

What is in your heart today?

A Punctured Balloon ~ by Joanne Lowe

Have you ever seen a balloon that has been punctured by a fingernail or object? It only takes one little hole in the balloon to deflate it. It may take a while for it to completely deflate but eventually all the air goes out. You may try to patch it with something and it might help for a while but doesn't last.

It is the same with our hearts. When someone...
